Independent Trustee & Family Office Services:

As an Independent Trustee we work with your other two trustees, who are normally a representative from the custodial bank and one of the family's trust attorneys.  The value we bring as an independent trustee is thirty-three years of direct investment experience with no bias towards internal product offerings.  We work to insure that the goals and aspirations of Gen1, the creator of the trusts, are realized as long as we are trustee, which could be decades.

As an Independent Trustee, we strive to create a strong relationship with the beneficiaries, whether they are charities or offspring.  We listen to the aspirations and needs of Gen2 & Gen3 to understand their visions of how they will perpetuate the family values thanks to their good fortune.  Van Rensselaer Management's mission is to promote as much harmony as is possible given the delicacy of inheritances, and to make sure there are no surprises when the estate is passed on.

The needs of one family usually vary significantly from the needs of other families.  Cookie cutter approaches do not satisfy the customers' need of a very hands-on professional.  Simple services such a bill paying and concierge help are easy to outsource.  What is difficult to find is the discrete advice provided by someone who has common sense and listening skills combined with a deep understanding of financial markets and multi-generational asset planning techniques.  A professional can work with only a few families, so a good fit is important for both parties.

About the advisor & manager:

Schuyler Winter is both a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER and someone with over thirty years of institutional investing experience.  Mr. Winter started his career in 1978 at the Chase Manhattan Bank in the Credit Training and Management Program.  During those years, he also earned an MBA from NYU at night.  In 1984, he joined Prudential Securities as an Institutional Equity Salesman and then spent sixteen years covering Institutional accounts.  During the Bull Market of the late 1990's, Mr. Winter managed the relationships of several of the most well known Global Hedge Funds and Mutual Funds.  His experience with these investors enabled him to see how capital moves between investment themes and different kinds of investors.  Prior to establishing Van Rensselaer Management LLC in 2007, Mr. Winter was an Advisor in Merrill Lynch's High Net Worth Group on Fifth Avenue.  He currently serves on several charitable boards and finance committees.

Investment Style:

Van Rensselaer Management LLC is about preservation of capital and growth.  Adequate asset diversification, appreciation of time horizons, income needs, and overall risk tolerance are factors in determining an individual’s or organization’s investments and/or the selection of their asset managers.  The selection is based on fundamental analysis, market sensitivity and technical perspective.  Investment objectives usually are to garner tax advantaged dividend income along with long term asset appreciation, while at all times maintaining liquidity.  Should income and estate tax laws change, appropriate adjustments to the investments should be made.
